Shanti Nivas Monastery to Punalur to the first and only house of the Congregation of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing in India. On November 9, 1996, three Sisters arrived from Rome on invitation of Dr. Mathias Kappil, Bishop of Punalur. In December 1996, the community was complete with 5 sisters. Their first domicile was a small house in Vilakkudy belonging to the ciocese of Punalur. They began immediately with regular monastic life. Some months later Indian vocations started to come in. A plot of seven acres was purchased from the diocese, an access road and culvert bridge were constructed.

Finally, on October 18, 1998 the cornerstone for Shanti Nivas Monastery was laid by Dr Mathias Kappil, Bishop of Punalur. On January 3rd 2000 he also officiated the blessing. On March 1st, 2000 the community move in. On June 1, 2000 at the request of the neighbours the sisters opened a Pre-School and rendered tuition services. On January 13, 2001 the Church was blessed by his Eminence Cardinal Joachim Meisner, Archbishop of Cologne, Germany. The main thrust at present is the formation of yound Indians. The community is open to other apostolates according to the needs of the Church and inconsonance our Benedictine life and prayer.

Location :

Santi Nivas Monastery, is situated on Benedictine Hill 3 km outside of Punalur.

By Car :

From Punalur, take the road towards Kottarakara till Pineapple Junction, then left side up the hill. From Kottarakara, take the road to Punalur till Pineapple Junction, then right side up the hill.

By Bus :

From Punalur railway station, take an auto the the convent (3 km). From Kollam railway station, take an auto to KSRTC bus station (2.5 km), then by till Kottarakara and follow direction “By Bus”.

By Air :

From Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). International Airport, take taxi or auto rickshaw to railway station or KSRTC bus station and take train/bus to Punalur (90 km distant) or directly via Punalur.
