The Vallombrosan Congregation founded by St. John Gualbert, began around 1036 when some intimate friends and disciples followed the saint to the forest of Vallombrosa to life the Rule of St. Benedict in its true spirit and maximum perfection.

Charaterized as ‘nova conversio’, the new monastic community strongly committed to the renovation of the church and the spiritual formation of the clergy under the charismatic leadership of the Founder.

In 1987, Abby of St. Mary of Montenero in Italy has taken the project of founding a new monastery in India as her greater vision and mission. Thus Abbot General Don Lorenzo russo OSB has requested to Mar Keriakose Kunnacherry, the Arch Bishop of Kottayam, to start a Vallombrosan Benedictine seminary in the territory of the diocese with due permission from the Oriental Congregation following the Syro – Malabar Oriental Rite. Accordingly a Vallombrosan Benedictine Minor Seminary ‘CARLOS DYARA’ was established on 20.06.1988 in S.H.Mount, Kottayam. And at present we have two more foundations in Inda. A Philosophical and Theological Study House in Bangalore and a CBSE Senior Secondary School in Kaduthuruthy. The new Monastery is under construction in Mariamala, Kaduthuruthy.

Rt. Rev. Mar Mathew Moolakatt OSB, Arch Bishop of Kottayam, is one of the first members of the Vallombrosan Benedictine Community in India.
